News from the Secretary, November-December 2005
With global environmental change gathering pace, and the almost universal recognition that climate change is with us and is already presenting numerous challenges to humanity, it would be inappropriate for us to be satisfied with our achievements over the past year. Rest assured that our New Year resolution will be to work harder.
Nevertheless in the past 4 years Doctors for the Environment has established itself as an organization that is scientifically credible and one that can gain access to those in power to brief them on the essentials for environmental sustainability. We have established educational programs and have sufficient financial members to maintain the momentum. We thank all those who have joined us and supported us in these endeavors.
Members will have received the Minutes of the Annual General Meeting held in Canberra on 27 November and the Annual Report, both of which are now on the Web Page www.dea.org.au
Management Committee Meeting held prior to the AGM.
Summary of the main decisions:-
• The three priorities of DEA for 2006 were confirmed as:
The health aspects of climate change. This will continue to be our main educational focus with politicians and the public.
We will continue to develop a childhood and environmental health policy with emphasis on the harmful effects of chemicals. Our role in educating the public will continue through the ‘posters in doctors surgeries project’ now called “Prescription for a Healthy Plane” and we will aim to expand this project nationally.
• In reaffirming these priorities we are conscious of the pressure from some members to tackle other issues. Indeed a good case can always be made for involvement. But we are resolved to avoid diffusing our activities with the danger of becoming ineffective in all of them! Nevertheless your committee does wish to continue to hear from members regarding issues that concern them. All issues raised with us will be carefully considered at the Management Committee teleconferences.
• Jo Senior from New South Wales has joined the Management Committee so that we now have representatives in all states and the ACT. Jo will be working to establish our processes for briefing federal and state members of parliament in NSW.
• Doctors for the environment will develop an Energy Policy that emphasizes the health aspects of the different forms of energy production. Within this policy the potential role of nuclear energy will be discussed.
• It was decided that we would try to expedite the formation of state committees to provide advice and action on state issues and to offer opportunities for personal contact between members. There is a West Australian Committee and soon there will be a Victorian Committee.
• Doctors for the Environment now have tax deductibility for donations. As a result the web page payment systems will be reorganized to allow appropriate receipts to be issued.
• Doctors for the Environment will increasingly participate in the functions of its parent organization, the International Society of Doctors for the Environment.
Prescription for a healthy planet
The DEA project Prescription for a Healthy Planet is running on schedule and posters with matching brochures and website are expected to be released by early February 2006. The two posters, on “Human health and climate change” and “Human health and biodiversity” are both educational and provide brief and accessible advice on actions that individuals can take. The posters will be A2 size (4 times A4), though we may be able to supply a limited number of smaller posters if necessary, and are designed for the practice waiting room environment. Please encourage your colleagues – whether GP’s or specialists - to display these posters. You can join our mailing list for posters by either submitting your details from the DEA website ww.dea.org.au emailing posters@dea.org.au or phoning Dr. Sarah Morton on (03) 5962 5313.
Web page www.dea.org.au
This page is under slow but continuing improvement and soon there will be a change of format. Attempt is made to display interesting news and scientific articles and to increase the number of links that might be of value to member. However we would like greater input from members to provide suggestions, articles and ideas for improvement. We thank those members who have written articles and hope that more will do so.
