News from the Secretary May-June 2006

State Committee News
Your management committee places priority on developing action within each State by establishing State committees. I can report to you that the WA Committee is now very active under the leadership of Bill Castleden. In Perth on June 10th, the Inaugural West Australian State meeting, dinner and lecture were held. There was an attendance of 25 members and three “interested” doctors - a pleasing attendance when one considers that our membership is well dispersed throughout the huge State of Western Australia. The presentation “The Science in Global Warming - Living on Greenhouse Earth” was given by Dr Ray Wills, Adjunct Senior Research Fellow, School of Earth and Geographical Sciences, The University of Western Australia. Our thanks are due to John and to Erica Stokes for organizing a most successful meeting and to Ray Wills for his stimulating address.

In the business part of the WA meeting, there was discussion on the public profile of DEA and we will be reporting to you on this issue once the management committee has considered the matter. Suffice it to say the WA members indicated that they would like DEA’s low profile raised. We recognize that we have a conflict of interest on this issue for our successful access to Ministers and Politicians has been based upon our policy of making no significant public criticism. Other organisations that “grandstand” in public do not get access. Obviously DEA will continue to discuss how we raise our profile without compromising the role we have developed.

Meeting with Shadow Minister of the Environment, Anthony Albanese
This meeting with our representatives took place in Canberra on June 1st. As indicated above, it is not our policy to report on the discussions that took place, but with all Ministers and Politicians it is fair to say that we present material defined in our policies and use scientific and medical data to explain issues and indicate where they might become part of policy. Your membership of DEA is vital in giving us the authority to pursue this work.

Submission to NICNAS (National Industrial Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme)
NICNAS is the National Chemicals Regulator with a broad coverage of chemicals including cosmetics, paints, solvents and plastics. Clearly there are significant health issues in this role. NICNAS is under review and submissions have been called. DEA has made a submission. For those members interested in this particular issue, the NICNAS web-site is www.nicnas.gov.au Please ask me for a copy of our submission which will be posted on the NICNAS site later.

Parliamentary Committee (Environment and Heritage) on Sustainability
Parliamentary Committees are an important point of contact with Members of the House. Submissions are posted on the parliamentary web site and so are generally available. In addition members of the committee consider these submissions in making their report. Finally, public hearings are held at which it is possible to address the committee and develop some of the points made in a submission.

DEA has made a submission (thanks mainly to the work of Colin Butler) to the “Inquiry into a Sustainability Charter” by the House Standing Committee on Environment and Heritage. Our submission is posted on the parliamentary web site, submission Number 80. Those interested to read it and other submissions can go to http://www.aph.gov.au/house/committee/environ/charter/index.htm

Appeal for Funds
As a result of the DEA appeal for funds, about $16,000 has been donated and monies are still coming in. Thank you to all who have donated so generously. To those who have delayed donating, please remember that we need to receive your donation before the end of this month for it to be tax deductible in the present financial year. We expect to use some of these monies for the educational project—the printing and distribution of Posters on Climate Change and Health and on Biodiversity and Health
(see www.healthyplanet.info) for we have now exhausted all our funds from the Department of Environment and Heritage grant and there will be no renewal of this grant.

For those who have not yet donated and wish to use the direct deposit method, please note the details are - Account Name: “Doctors for the Environment, Australia” BSB 105108 Account 025060640
