At its meeting on 28th February the WA State Committee of DEA decided it would be appropriate for DEA to have a stand at the 2007 Perth Sunfair at the University of Western Australia. This was seen as being an activity consistent with DEA’s aim to become more ‘visible’ in educating the public about the health effects of environmental and climate degradation.

The Sunfair is an annual event in Perth showcasing sustainable living, see www.perthsunfair.com.au . It proved an excellent opportunity to promote our organisation and to educate the public. The 2007 event on April 1st was the fourth Perth Sunfair.

Dr Irene Kirczenow created a stall with the enthusiastic help of John Stokes and Verelle Roocke. All three are members of the WA State Committee of DEA, John also being the National Treasurer. They created banners, posters and educational material.

Throughout the day they handed out "prescriptions for a healthier planet" and were kept busy talking to a steady stream of interested people. Janet Roddy, a Perth rheumatologist and member of DEA, helped at the stall and provided her lovely daughters to entertain children with face painting and colouring in.

Meanwhile Bill Castleden, Chair of DEA, addressed the public with two presentations on “climate change and health and what can we do about it”.

Irene created and printed a small run of T shirts for the WA State committee bearing the DEA logo with a view to perhaps doing a larger scale print run for fund raising purposes by offering them for sale to our national membership. Members reading this report who would like to purchase a T-shirt should contact Irene Kirczenow (russalka@optusnet.com.au) who will organize another print run if there is enough interest.

Overall, the day was a great success. Many people wondered at first what doctors could have to do with the environment. After talking with us, they went away more informed
and their comments seemed uniformly congratulatory. We had interest from several potential new members and the networking opportunity was valuable.

As other State Committees of DEA become more active, there may be similar opportunities to present at sustainability fairs elsewhere.
