“Dear Dr Castleden and Colleagues,
Thank you for your letter seeking the views of the Australian Democrats on the potential health impacts of climate change. I commend you for your commitment to addressing the very critical issue of climate change in Australia and would very much welcome your future input in formulating Australian Democrat social policy.
We welcome your informed and timely survey on this matter, and are happy to provide responses to your individual questions as attached.
I am afraid that I ran out of space on the Questionnaire form you sent. As such I have a couple of additional answers, as detailed below:
10. (b) On this issue I have chosen the “Yes” option. As a point of clarification my own beliefs on this issue are closely aligned with that of the Democrat membership and all my Senate colleagues. I continue to be informed and educated by active Democrat members on this issue.
11. The Australian Democrats I have raised the issue of climate change many times in the Senate. Our latest question was 16th June and can be found through http://www.aph.gov.au/senate/handsard
I am open to receiving your ideas for questions that need asking, and encourage you to contact my office in this respect.
12. I am unaware of any other process which would provide adequately for public consultation, comment and scrutiny. It would be good to remove party politics from problem-solving within government, however a diversity of views is a good thing to have on any issue. The forum to air those views is also vital and is provided by our democratic system.
Yours sincerely,
Senator Lyn Allison
Spokesperson on Environment and Energy

Comments
The Governments Energy Statement was heavily influenced by coal and aluminium lobbies. I am concerned at the way unproven geosequestration is being pushed as a result.
Australia must support increased renewable energy generation now to make progress to the required 60% by 2050 greenhouse gas reductions.
An increase in energy efficiency by domestic, business and transport sectors is also urgent
Australia must also play a constructive role in supporting international climate change mitigation.
